15 Tips And Tricks For Thrifting

Shopping at thrift stores can seem intimidating to some, but with these tips and tricks, you'll be guaranteed a great find. Well, maybe not guaranteed, but you're more likely to find something good.

  1. Go on a week day, if possible. Most people shop on the weekends, so go on a weekday to avoid crowds.
  2. Ask when your store restocks, and go either that day or the day after to get a bigger selection of inventory.
  3. Look for things that you can re purpose. For example, a scarf that would make a great belt, or something like that.
  4. Go at least once a week. You don't have to buy anything, just look around and see if there's anything good.
  5. Give yourself a time limit and budget. For example, you can't spend any more then $100,and you can only stay for an hour.
  6. Haggle over prices on damaged items. If you find something that you like that's damaged, ask for a lower price.
  7. Make a list of things you're looking for, and bring it with you whenever you go shopping. I suggest making a list on your phone, so you'll pretty much always have it with you.
  8.   If there is one, get the app for whichever thrift stores you go to. You'll get updates on sales and discounts.
  9. Take cash. Thrift store don't always accept debit or credit cards, or even checks, so make sure you have enough cash.
  10. Make friends with the employees and other shoppers. They might be able to help you find what you're looking for.
  11. Get seasonal items when they're out of season. If it's summer and you see cheap Christmas decorations, buy them and just store them until winter.
  12. Look in the back of the store for the best deals. In most store, the clearance is at the back, and thrift stores are no different.
  13. Bring a reusable grocery bag or two, since most thrift stores don't have carts. But make sure that you check with the store so they know you're not trying to steal anything.
  14. Only buy what you need. This is especially important at thrift stores, where everything cheap, but make sure that you don't just buy it because of the price tag.
  15. Examine whatever you want closely. Check for stains, missing tags and buttons, broken zippers and buttons, and holes or rips.
